Episode One:

In the first episode Meredith wakes up next to her one night stand and promptly sends him home, only to discover when she turns up for her first day as an intern that her one night stand is Dr Derek Shepherd, a surgeon at the hospital.

The interns have a tough first shift, especially George who is given the chance to perform surgery (while everyone watches). George makes a mistake and then freezes, unable to fix what he's done and forcing the other surgeons to step in before the patient dies. From then on he is known as 007 - licensed to kill.

George's day doesn't get much better when he makes the mistake of promising a wife whose husband is about to have surgery that he will be fine, only to have him die on the operating table.

Meanwhile, Christina is determined to prove that she is the best, and teams up with Meredith to help solve a puzzling diagnosis problem - with the prize being a chance to join in on the surgery. When they find the solution Christina is in for a shock - Derek Shepherd picks Meredith to help with the surgery. Christina can't help but feel a little jealous, not to mention suspicious that Meredith was picked because she had slept with him. But Meredith is as ambitious as Christina in her own quiet way, and does not let such an opportunity pass by.

After her shift Meredith goes to visit her mother, who was a famous surgeon in her time. Here we learn Meredith's secret - her mother is now struggling with a devastating illness that leaves her unable to recognize her own daughter.

Episode Two:

A young woman suffers a brutal rape and during surgery the doctors discover she has bitten off her attacker's you-know-what.

The severed member becomes Meredith's property until the police arrive to claim it, and she carts it around the hospital in a chilly bin while she goes about her shift.

Meanwhile, Meredith becomes concerned for a newborn in the hospital nursery, and puts her career on the line by going over the heads of the doctors in charge to get help. Although Meredith proves to be right in this case, she is given a warning about upsetting other departments in the hospital.

George is having another bad shift, feeling like the Angel of Death after five of his patients die on him. He cheers up slightly when Christina points out that the particular shift he's on has a 90% mortality rate.

Christina and Alex, both desperate for surgical experience, end up frastrated as patient after patient turns out to be perfectly well and gets sent home.

And Izzie has an encounter with an injured illegal immigrant, who she ends up fixing in an alleyway, despite the fact that it's against the hospital rules.

Episode Three:

When the annual bicycle messenger race takes place in Seattle, the hospital emergency room fills with an assortment of injuries, causing the interns to compete for the most severe cases.

Meredith finds herself fixing a cyclist with spokes poking out of his stomach. After sewing up his wounds she urges him to wait and have a scan for internal injuries, but the patient insists on leaving and getting back to the bike race, and he gets support from Alex who agrees the wounds are superficial.

Meanwhile, a man has been brought in with severe head injuries from trying to avoid one of the cyclists (and ending up in front of a moving vehicle). The man's injuries are so severe that he is technically dead and only being kept alive by machines, but he has no ID on him and the hospital has to track down his family.

Izzie becomes attached to this patient and determined to keep him alive as long as possible. She finds support from Christina who recognizes the potential for organ donation, and along with Meredith they pitch their case to keep the man alive until his next of kin can be found and asked for donation.

It helps their cause that there is another patient in the hospital needing a liver transplant, and that this VIP patient is a good friend of Dr Webber, the chief of surgery. This VIP patient has developed a crush on George, leading to George's discovery that his fellow interns thought he was gay.

The brain dead man's wife and daughter are eventually tracked down and the wife gives consent for donation, despite Christina's blundering insensitivity when asking.

The 'harvest' operation goes ahead, although the interns are annoyed to see that Alex, who has had nothing to do with the patient until now, has weaseled his way into doing the surgery.

Meanwhile, the cyclist that insisted on rejoining the race comes back to the hospital and collapses on the floor, his wound reopened. The surgeons are able to save him but his cyclist friends get a lecture from Dr Bailey on how their antics cost a man his life.

During all this hospital drama Derek Shepherd continues to pursue Meredith, who continues to flirt with him and reject him at the same time.

And Meredith, who had been regretting having Izzie and George as flatmate's, decides she needs to just chill out and enjoy their company.

Episode Four:

Christina gets to the hospital half an hour before everyone else so she can bag herself the patient most likely to need surgery. But the patient turns out to be a former nurse at the hospital, who can tell immediately what Christina is up to and doesn't tell her that she's not in for surgery - she's in to die. By the time Christina realizes what's happening she has learned a lesson about patient care, and for the first time become upset at a death.

Adding to Christina's bad day is the fact that looking after the former nurse caused her to miss out on a unique piece of surgery - a man who has fallen down stairs with a nail gun and subsequently has eight nails embedded in his brain.

The man is conscious and talking, and Derek Shepherd gets the interns to do some research and help him prepare for the surgery, which goes to plan. However, there is a shock in store for the patient and his wife - he has a tumor (which is what caused him to lose his balance in the first place). The patient is left with a choice between a risky procedure that could make him lose his memory but will allow him to live longer, or having 5 more years with his memory intact.

The patient chooses to go ahead with the procedure, a decision which doesn't sit well with Meredith, who is struggling to deal with her mother's Alzheimer's disease. Meredith tries to tell the patient's wife they've made a mistake, which only serves to upset the wife and results in Meredith being told off by Derek for interfering.

Meanwhile, Izzy is dealing with a patient who has prostate cancer and has a magazine beside his bed with a photo shoot in it - of Izzy in underwear. The man refuses to have Izzy look after him, but Dr Bailey insists that Izzy has to persevere. In the end the patient admits to Izzy that he is terrified of losing his ability to have a normal love life, and having the woman he's fantasized about assisting is just too much for him.

The underwear shoot causes more problems when Alex spots the photo, copies it and pastes it all over the hospital. Izzy finally snaps at him in the locker room, taking off her clothes to give him a better look and making the point that her modeling allowed her to get through medical school debt free while the rest of them are burdened with $200,000 loans.

When her prostate patient goes into surgery, Izzie watches with Dr Bailey, who comments that the surgeon is known as Dr Limp because he always insists on destroying the nerves to make sure all the cancer is removed, when it's possible in some cases to save the nerves - and therefore the love life. Izzy decides to step into the surgery and plead with the doctor to save the man's nerves, who agrees but says he's going to complain about her.

In their personal lives, Izzy and George clash when Izzy wanders around their house in her underwear and walks in on George in the shower, making George feel 'emasculated'. The two make up, although George is unable to admit part of his problem stems from his crush on Meredith.

And Meredith agrees to go for breakfast with Derek, despite earlier reservations about it being unprofessional.

Episode Five:

An exhausted Meredith is struggling to deal with the responsibility of dealing with her rapidly-deteriorating mother while also getting through her internship. Things come to a head when she nods off during surgery while holding a patient's heart, and it slips. Although this isn't a big deal in itself, when Meredith takes her gloves off after surgery she discovers her nail has ripped through the tip of the glove. She is immediately paranoid that she may have nicked the patient's heart.

Meredith doesn't speak up during surgery, and waits anxiously to see if the patient recovers from the surgery. She tells George what happened and he advises her not to tell Burke, and that the heart is tough and it should be alright.

But later, the patient gets worse and has to be taken into surgery, and Meredith blurts out - in front of the husband - that she may have nicked the woman's heart.

During surgery Meredith is told off for not reporting it at the time and - even worse - mentioning it in front of the husband. Burke doesn't think the nick is related to what has gone wrong, as the damage to the woman's heart is quite severe - but she is likely to be in trouble anyway.

Meredith tries to talk to the husband about the woman's medical history, but he is adamant that it is Meredith's fault and won't cooperate. He says the woman was in the best shape of her life, having lost 100 pounds.

Meanwhile, during surgery on another patient who was in the hospital five years ago, the doctors discover the woman has a towel in her lung cavity - left during the previous surgery.

Christina looks up on the file to find out who performed the first surgery and discovers it was Burke, who has been showing an interest in her.

Bailey tells Christina that she will deal with it and that Christina isn't to mention it to anyone.

Meanwhile Izzie's plan to throw a party for her new boyfriend starts to go awry, when more and more people are invited and she hasn't had time to talk to Meredith about the size of the gathering.

To make matters worse, she gets held up trying to discharge one of Alex's patients, who is addicted to painkillers. The patient struggles and ends up falling and hitting his head, needing immediate brain surgery.

While the party is in full swing, Izzie and Alex opt to stay for the surgery. Afterward, Alex shows he has a nice side by insisting Izzie leave to go to the party (which Alex wasn't invited to) while he does post-op.

Izzie leaves and runs into her boyfriend outside. He's been to the party, discovered the missing Izzie and the by-now-very-drunk Meredith, Christina and George, and has come to find her. The two have a fight about going back to the party, with Izzie insisting he meet her new friends and co-workers, and the boyfriend leaves.

Back at the party, Meredith has hooked up with Derek, and the two of them are caught in the car by Bailey.

The next day, the house a mess, Meredith has to face her inquiry. She mentions the comment about the woman losing 100 pounds, and Izzie asks how the woman's muscle mass was. This gives Meredith an idea...

During the inquiry, Meredith explains that although the patient still weighed 200 pounds, the extreme weight loss meant she was essentially like an anorexic, with severely reduced muscle mass. The lawyers are unmoved, saying Meredith's actions have harmed the hospital, but Burke speaks up for her. He chooses this moment to admit to leaving the towel in the patient, and how he had doubts at the time but didn't speak up. He says even great doctors make mistakes, and if they can't tell the truth for fear of retribution then the system will fail. This is enough to save Meredith's internship.

Outside, Bailey tells Christina that Burke was purposely waiting for the most opportune time to admit his mistake, because "knowledge is power". Christina, who had begun to mistrust Burke, suddenly has a newfound respect for him. She tracks him down to the locker room and they end up in a 'passionate embrace'.

Episode Six:

Alex gains the trust of Annie, a nervous patient with an extraordinarily large tumor. But he blows his chances of scrubbing in for surgery when she overhears him being less than polite about what kind of person chooses to ignore an enormous tumor for a year rather than seek help.

Christina and George get to scrub in for surgery instead - a day-long ordeal that involves holding up the heavy tumor while the surgeons try to remove it. Alex spots his chance to get involved when the blood supply runs out, but when he runs into the surgery with the fresh blood it is too late, Annie has died on the operating table.

Meanwhile, Alex has failed to replace the battery of his beeper and is unaware that Izzie is desperately in need of help. Alone and unable to find help in time, Izzie must perform an emergency procedure she has never even seen done. Izzie succeeds in saving the patient's life and is later praised by Burke. When Alex accuses her of trying to get all the glory for herself she loses the plot, telling him she paged him 50 times. Alex checks his pager and feels suitably stupid.

Derek chooses Meredith to assist with an elderly Parkinson's patient, but Bailey disapproves of their relationship and tells Derek that if he keeps favoring Meredith she will make sure Meredith suffers.

The Parkinson's patient refuses to have brain surgery that could dramatically improve his condition, but his daughter wants him to. The daughter asks Meredith to try and talk her father into it. When Meredith approaches Derek about it she ends up getting a lecture from him - in front of Bailey - and she drops it.

But after another plea from the daughter, Meredith - who understands the pain of dealing with an ill parent - goes to speak to the father. She points out that it's not just about his life; it's about the daughter too. He agrees to the surgery, but only if it's performed that day. The surgery goes ahead and is successful.

On the romantic front, George decides that he has to do something about his crush on Meredith. But when he goes to her room with a couple of beers, he finds her gone. Meredith has gone to see Derek, having finally decided that she wants to continue their relationship, despite the hassles.

Burke confronts Christina about what is going on between them, but Christina is her usual mocking self: "You need a definition? Do you really want to be that guy?" she asks him. Burke gets her point, and tells her to lock the door...

Episode Seven:

Derek and Meredith try to be discreet as they spend the night together at Meredith's house, but George and Izzie spot Derek as he tries to sneak out in the morning.

They are both rattled by this discovery. Is he using her? Is she sleeping with him to help her career? Is it just that he's really hot?!

During their shift Izzie is snarky toward Meredith. She discovers that Christina already knew about the relationship, and to her surprise Christina is cool with it, believing that Meredith is good at what she does and deserves the surgery opportunities she's been given.

But Izzie isn't convinced and finally has it out with Meredith. Is it true love or the surgery prizes that has her sleeping with her boss? Meredith tells Izzie that she met Derek before she knew they'd be working together, and that it isn't about either of those things. Izzie realizes that Meredith has actually fallen for Derek and feels better about it.
Meanwhile George has spent the day side by side with Derek while treating a child who needs brain surgery. George is having trouble hiding his anger at Derek, but Derek treats George with respect and asks him to scrub in on the surgery.

Things go wrong, however, when George suspects an anesthesiologist of drinking on the job. He breaks the 'doctor code' and speaks up in the operating room, which prompts Derek to throw George out. But during the surgery the anesthesiologist falls asleep and fails to notice that the child is waking up, prompting Derek to kick him out and later apologies to George. He tells George that although there is a code among doctors that you don't speak up in front of everyone, it was the right thing to do and he's sorry he kicked George out of the surgery. George barely accepts the apology and Derek realizes what this is all about - that he was spotted leaving the flat that morning. He assures George that his relationship with Meredith will not affect their internships, and that he will not hurt her.

Elsewhere in the hospital, Alex has been treating a man who finds honor in self-mutilation. The patient has purposely got himself shot in the shoulder, but the wound has gone right through and nicked his rib. The surgery goes fine but later the patient starts suffering symptoms of a fever, and Alex discovers the man has an infected tattoo. Although the tattoo had only a slight infection in the morning, the stress of the bullet wound has caused it to get terribly infected during the day. The patient gets quickly worse and when his heart stops the doctors are unable to revive him. Alex is visibly shocked by this, especially as the patient was the first person he'd met in the hospital from his home town of Iowa.

Cristina has spent the day seemingly battling a case of the flu and feeling ill when she looks at certain foods. But we see her later in the bathroom with a couple of pregnancy tests.

Episode Eight:

Alex treats Devo, a patient whose religious beliefs jeopardies her chances for recovery. Devo is an Orthodox Jew who needs a new heart valve, which is usually taken from a pig. She refuses the pig valve even though her parents are all for it. But Alex comes up with a solution - a cow valve, which is a new innovation in heart surgery. He tells the family about this option, and promptly gets told off by Burke for mentioning it without checking with him first.

It soon emerges that Burke's anger is based on the fact that he doesn't feel confident doing a procedure he's never done before. When he tells Christina this she tells him to just get over himself, do some research, and get on with it. Which he does.

Meanwhile, the interns are mystified by Cable, a patient who's being treated for seizures and who thinks he's psychic. The patient seems to know all sorts of things that he shouldn't know. Some could be educated guesses - such as the fact that someone is about to die on the 4th floor - but others are bizarre, like knowing that Christina is pregnant.

Izzie finds herself drawn to this patient. That morning she had been trying to bake cupcakes and couldn't get them 'right', despite George assuring her they were great. There was a missing ingredient, but she refused to ring her estranged mother and ask what it was. When Izzie meets Cable he says he makes her think of chocolate cupcakes, and then he calls her cricket - which is her mother's pet name for her. When Cable tells Izzie what the missing ingredient of her cupcakes is she takes it as a sign and calls her mum.

Meanwhile, Christina has to take care of Zoey, a pregnant woman in her 40s who's been diagnosed with cancer. Cristina, contemplating an abortion herself, advises Zoey that this would be the best option for her. But Zoey decides to keep the baby and risk her own life, a decision Christina openly disagrees with. The two agree to disagree.

In the love live department, Meredith grows increasingly dissatisfied with the unknown details of Derek's life. She points out that he always likes to stay at her house, and they never stay at his.

Derek tells her she doesn't need to know everything right from the start, but after being pestered by Meredith for details he gives in...and it turns out he lives in a trailer! But the trailer is parked on his own block of land.

And George scores himself a date with a nurse, after successfully performing a procedure in front of her that he had stuffed up earlier in the day.

Episode Nine:

When George gets an itch 'down there' he approaches Alex for help - is it what he thinks it is? Unfortunately for George the answer is yes, he has syphilis.

The only person he's slept with 'in a while' is Olivia, the nurse, so he can only conclude that he got it from her. When he awkwardly approaches her to tell her she runs away.

Everyone quickly finds out George's secret and when Alex goes to give him a shot of penicillin in the backside all the interns turn up to watch. But George isn't the only one with a problem - it turns out there's an outbreak of syphilis among the staff and everyone who's slept with anyone on the ward has to go get checked.

Christina awkwardly joins the queue, followed by Burke, but after a quick discussion they realize neither has slept with anyone else and slink away relieved. Likewise, Meredith and Derek establish that they don't need to join the testing queue either.

When Olivia approaches George to apologies, she says that when she first saw him she was sleeping with someone else because she wasn't sure how serious they'd get. Who was that someone else? Alex. George jumps on Alex and tries to beat him up but is dragged off by the other interns.

Meanwhile, Izzie and Cristina treat a man whose wife and daughter are at odds over his care. The man has fluid in his abdomen, and because he is a heavy drinker it's possibly been brought on by liver disease. The wife has some sympathy, but the daughter clearly resents her father for his alcoholism and cares little about his diagnosis or his treatment.

Bailey gives Izzie and Christina the chance to perform the surgery to remove the fluid by themselves, assuming they've seen it done. They haven't, but they go ahead anyway, and everything goes okay until Izzie discovers the patient's heart has stopped beating.

Izzie and Christina are disappointed to learn the family don't want an autopsy performed because they want to know what went wrong. They realize it's the daughter who is adamant there's no need for one because she's already made up her mind that her father drank himself to death. The two decide to perform an autopsy in secret but get caught in the act by Bailey. Bailey is furious, until the interns show her the enormous heart they've pulled out of the man's chest. It turns out he had a rare blood disorder - one that is genetic - and by performing the autopsy they've potentially saved the daughter's life.

Meanwhile, Burke treats Bill, a college buddy with a very pregnant wife who is having bladder issues. The scan shows up something quite unusual - Bill has an ovary. This is a throwback from the womb, where an embryo hasn't split properly, and not serious.

However, during the operation to remove it another surgeon points out that Bill is sterile, and always has been. So who is the father of his baby? A very angry Burke approaches Bill's wife and tells her what they've discovered. She begs him not to tell Bill, saying what he doesn't know won't hurt him. Burke disagrees and says that, as his doctor, he is going to tell Bill the truth.

Chief Webber reluctantly confides to Derek Shepherd about his own medical concerns. He has been having trouble seeing out of one eye, but it's something that comes and goes. Derek runs some tests on the sly and discovers he has a tumor. Webber doesn't want word of this to get out, so they arrange a top-secret operation involving only a few staff, including Meredith.

When Webber wakes up he can see, which means the operation was a success, and the first thing he sees is Meredith and Derek together. He warns Meredith that she's making a mistake, but Meredith has been through this already and is confident that she is doing the right thing.

Meredith even feels confident confiding in Derek about her mother's illness, but just as they grow more intimate a bombshell is dropped - Derek's wife turns up!

... SEASON TWO ...

Episode Ten:

Meredith is in the Emerald City Bar drinking and discussing her relationship problems with Joe, the barman. Meanwhile, Derek confronts his wife Addison who says it was Richard who asked her to come to Seattle. Addison accuses Derek of leaving his life in Manhattan. Back in the bar Christina tells Meredith that she is pregnant. Suddenly, Joe collapses.

At the hospital, Christina won't tell Meredith who she is sleeping with. Derek approaches Meredith who refuses to listen to his explanations.

Richard tells Derek his appointment of Addison was not personal. He makes Burke Acting-Chief while he is recovering because he knows Derek has been sleeping with an intern.

Burke asks Christina out to dinner but she refuses. Addison requests Meredith to assists her with a pregnant patient. The patient overhears that Meredith slept with Addison's husband. From his hospital bed Richard asks George to be his eyes and ears. So George begins snooping around.

Burke and Derek explain "standstill" surgery to Joe. By lowering his temperature, they will stop his heart and prevent blood flow to the brain. They will then have 45 minutes to remove the aneurysm and bring him back to life. The procedure will cost a couple of hundred grand and Joe will lose his bar to pay for it. George overhears this.

Izzie accuses Alex of being unfeeling because he doesn't know his patients names. Alex teases Izzie that she likes him. Burke is fed up that he doesn't know what Christina wants. George sees him kiss her. Reporting back to Richard, George says nothing is happening in the hospital.

The pregnant patient asks how Meredith could sleep with someone else's husband. The patient says her husband slept with someone else while she was pregnant. Christina checks on Joe and vomits from morning sickness. She tells Joe not to repeat what she said in the bar. George tells Meredith that he saw Christina kissing Burke. Meredith realizes Burke is the father. Derek reprimands Addison for requesting Meredith to be her intern.

Meredith and Addison book surgery for the pregnant woman and Joe goes in for his operation. In surgery, Joe "dies" on the operating table and Derek has 45 minutes to remove the aneurysm. George tries to file paperwork for a grant to help Joe pay for the operation.

Watching the surgery, Alex and Izzie talk about getting together. She says that nothing about Alex is remotely human. Derek removes the aneurysm and Burke brings Joe back to life.

Burke talks with Richard about being Chief. Richards says that they are the same because they put the job first. Afterward when Christina tells Burke she will go to dinner with him he ends the relationship saying that they have their careers to think about.

Richard eventually signs George's request for a grant to pay for Joe's operation. The pregnant patient tells Addison she doesn't want Meredith working on her because she reminds her of her husband's mistress. Addison tells her that she was the one who cheated on Derek so Meredith is the wronged woman.

Derek explains that he found Addison sleeping with his best friend so he came to Seattle. He says that meeting Meredith was like a breath of fresh air. Meredith tells him that is not enough for her and leaves.

Izzie watches Alex check on Joe. Alex calls George over and gives him a hug for getting Joe the finance grant. Izzie sees Alex in a new light. At the bar Christina tells Meredith she put her down as an emergency contact at a clinic. That's why she told her she was pregnant. Christina says that Burke has just dumped her. Meredith gives her a hug.

Episode Eleven:

Meredith and Christina complain about their love lives. Derek still doesn't understand why his explanation is not enough. Meredith says its because he waited for Addison to tell her he was married.

Burke shows his superiority by rescheduling Derek's surgery. A family of car crash victims arrive. The father is given to Izzie, the son to Alex and the mother to Christina. The man in the other car is given to George to try and revive with nurse, Olivia.

A patient with a bowel obstruction, Miranda assumes is carrying drugs, is given to Meredith. George works fruitlessly on his already dead patient. Miranda makes him do every procedure he can to get his heart working again.

Derek discharges Richard but not until his wife, Adele, arrives to take him home. Richard is not happy with Derek for calling her in.

Alex works on the son from the car crash who says it was his father's road rage that caused the accident. Christina gets a different story from his mother who tries to protect her abusive husband. In surgery, the father who had existing liver damage will not survive without a transplant. His only hope is a family donor.

Miranda makes George keep working on his patient even though it's futile. Meredith tries to find out what is blocking her patients bowel. The x-ray reveals that he has swallowed ten Judy doll heads.

Olivia apologizes to George for sleeping with Alex and giving him syphilis. George pronounces the patient. Alex shares with the boy that he too had an abusive father and felt guilty for not being able to protect his mother. The boy is a match for being a liver donor. Christina tries to talk the mother out of letting her son donate. Burke reprimands her saying it's not her decision.

Burke's OR's are overbooked. Adele tells Burke she wants Richard to retire, Burke appears to want this too. Izzie pressures Alex's patient to give his father part of his liver. Alex tells her off for making a sales pitch to the boy.

George sees Richard and Adele out. Richard tells him to phone him everyday. Addison congratulates Meredith for not taking Derek back and reminds her that there are two sides to every story.

At lunch, George ignores Olivia much to the disgust of Meredith and Christina. Izzie says that George has a crush on someone else.

The bowel obstruction operation is a success. George is given a donor patient and realizes that she is not completely brain-dead. George gets Derek to overrule the other surgeon. They argue and ultimately Burke lets Derek take the patient.

Alex tells his patient that he became a wrestler so when his father hit his mother he could beat him up. After his father left Alex says he wished he had never laid a hand on him, that they had talked things through.
